The project, based in the Atelierhaus Ludwig-Engel-Weg 1 (LEW1), sees itself as a cultural center, hub and thought laboratory for interdisciplinary discussion as well as new forms of digital art, art education and culture in Darmstadt.
Digitalisation and technologisation have an impact on all areas of life. As an essential part of our society, culture is heavily affected But only if we regularly take a critical look at the changes and developments of a Smart City like Darmstadt and question the processes that are taking place do we have the chance to play an active role in shaping and participating in the culture of our city.
What does culture look like in a Smart City? What scientific and cultural potential is there for further development and networking in Darmstadt and the surrounding area? And how can we mutually benefit even better from our individual knowledge background?
Recurring formats of KeD are artist residencies that invite people to exchange ideas through exhibitions and open studios, so-called ‘Digital*Salons’ (interdisciplinary expert groups to discuss issues relating to the culture of a Smart City), readings and lectures as well as educational offers and workshops for children and adults.
Active participation in events, comments and statements of visitors and followers to the events and social media posts of KeD are not only desired, but the main concern and basis of the association. Contradictions, questions and ideas determine the output of the projects. The goal is not to convey pre-formed messages, information or results. On the contrary, the focus here is on open-ended experiments, the identification of blind spots in social and cultural developments, and analog and digital encounters with one another that are interested in one another. Corona has made it clear: In the physical, analog space, the questions of the culture of a digital city can still be discussed very productively. A discourse can thus be opened and conducted offline as well as online according to the individual formats.
Recurring formats of KeD are artist residencies, which invite exchange through exhibition and open studios, the Artist-in-Science-Residence in cooperation with hessian.AI, FAIR/GSI and ESOC, so-called “Digital*Salons” (interdisciplinary expert* rounds to discuss issues of the culture of a digital city), readings and lectures as well as educational offers and workshops for children and adults.
